The publication of A Reunion Some Day: Godfather of Taiwan Black Movie, Tsai Yang-Ming was celebrated with a grand event attended by TSAI Yang-ming alongside three generations of his family.

Published in collaboration with Yuan-Liou Publishing Co., YANG Li-Hua: The Legendary Taiwanese Opera Artist and Her Times made its debut at the Taipei International Book Exhibition 2025. Author SHIH Ju-fang and Golden Bell Award–winning actor CHEN Ya-lan attended the book talk to celebrate the new release.

The first fan meeting of Taiwanese opera national treasure YANG Li-hua’s career was held at the Institute, drawing over a thousand devoted fans.

Newly restored films Sunset Over the West and Love in Okinawa were selected for Cinema at Sea – Okinawa Pan-Pacific International Film Festival, where Chairman Arthur CHU and actress CHOU Yu were invited to attend the international premieres.

The digitally restored version of The Woman of Wrath opened simultaneously in 16 cinemas across Taiwan, including Vieshow, Ambassador, and Showtime Cinemas.

In collaboration with the Fantasporto – Porto International Film Festival, the Institute presented a program on female desire and revenge in Taiwanese classic cinema, featuring restored titles The Woman of Wrath, Story of Mother, Vengeance of the Phoenix Sisters, Girls’ School, and This Love of Mine.

In collaboration with renowned Taiwanese illustrator Wu Chi (57 art), TFAI developed the mascots Findy & Didi, inspired by the design concept of a film projector. The characters not only highlight the Institute's vital mission in preserving audiovisual heritage, but also serve as an important bridge connecting audiences through shared cinematic memories.

Under the theme “Shout out to,” the 5th Joint Awards Ceremony for Outstanding Audiovisual Professionals brought together leading industry organizations including the Directors Guild of Taiwan, Chinese Society of Cinematographers, Yang Shih-chi Memorial Award Committee, Taiwan Film Critics Society, Taipei Film Drama Occupational Union, Taiwan Film Producer Association, Commercial Radio Broadcasting Association, The Editing Association of ROC, Taipei Film Trade Association, Taiwan Screenwriters Association, and Taiwan Film Creators Association. The event honored often unseen behind-the-scenes professionals, celebrating their contributions while inspiring younger generations to pursue careers in the audiovisual industry.

The world premiere of the digitally restored The Story of a Small Town was held as part of the Institute's 47th anniversary celebrations, accompanied by performances and community activities that drew a full house.

In collaboration with the Taipei Representative Office in the UK and the British Film Institute (BFI), the Institute presented the program "Myriad Voices: Reframing Taiwan New Cinema."

In collaboration with the National Museum of Taiwan Literature, the Institute presented the special exhibition "Rewriting the Script: Unexpected Twists in Taiwan Literature and Screen Media."

In collaboration with the Udine Far East Film Festival, the Institute presented a special tribute to PAI Ching-jui, featuring the world premieres of the digitally restored Lonely Seventeen, Good Bye! Darling, and Accidental Trio, with the digitally restored version of LEE Hsing’s The Story of a Small Town also making its international premiere.

The Institute hosted its first overnight marathon screening of TSAI Ming-liang’s Walker series.

In celebration of International Museum Day, the Institute launched over a thousand archival audiovisual materials on the TFAI Open Museum platform, including nearly 2,000 Taiwan Film Culture Co. newsreels from 1970 to 1973, as well as specially produced oral history interviews marking the 40th anniversary of Taiwan New Cinema, featuring filmmakers such as KO I-cheng, LIAO Ching-sung, TSENG Chuang-hsiang, Loretta YANG, and SHU Kei through digital archiving, audiovisual documentation, and open access, the initiative highlights the museum’s role in preserving cultural memory and promoting public knowledge, advancing its core values of sustainability and accessibility.

Continuing its commitment to film education, the Institute launched “TFAI Theater of Wonders,” featuring pre-screening introductions, post-screening Q&As, talks, picture book storytelling, hands-on activities, and exhibitions, inviting children to discover new treasures through films and adults to revisit cherished memories.

To mark the centenary of legendary filmmaker Robert ALTMAN, winner of the top prize at each of Europe’s three major film festivals and a five-time Academy Award nominee for Best Director, the Institute presented “Robert Altman 100: Fireworks of Human Voices,” screening 10 of his classic works.

The digitally restored Gorgeous was invited to the Taipei Film Festival for its world premiere.

Formosa, the earliest surviving film featuring footage shot in Taiwan over a century ago that remains viewable today, was made publicly available on the Institute’s official YouTube channel. Research findings were also published in a special feature in Issue 203 of the Film Appreciation Journal.

The Institute presented the “XinZhuang Community Cinema” series, hosting screenings and active aging programs at the Huangyu and Zhonghuan Activity Centers to foster neighborhood engagement and bring cinema into the community. Through post-screening active aging sessions, seniors were invited to reflect on and share their life experiences through classic films.

Renowned Hong Kong director Johnnie TO made a special trip to Taiwan to attend a pre-screening talk for The Mission(1999), the opening film of the Institute's “Infinite Visions: Johnnie To and Milkyway Image" program.

As part of the Ministry of Culture's “We TAIWAN" cultural initiative at Expo 2025 Osaka, the Institute curated the special program "The Glorious Past and Present of Taiwan Cinema," screening 10 cross-generational Taiwanese classics at Osaka City Central Public Hall from August 11 to 20.

In collaboration with the PX Mart's Sunmake Cultural Foundation, the Institute presented the “TFAI Classic Film Festival – Old-School Romance” program at the Yilan Traditional Arts Center, screening four romance films—My Native Land, The Story of a Small Town, Cloud of Romance, and The Wedding Banquet—highlighting evolving views on love and cultural change across generations in Taiwan.

The digitally restored The Fellow Who Rejected College held its world premiere at GV VivoCity's 602-seat GVmax premium auditorium in Singapore.

The digitally restored Tracing to EXPO ’70 opened the Osaka Asian Film Festival, with Chairman Arthur CHU and lead actress Judy ONGG in attendance at the world premiere.

The Institute's 4K restoration of Vive L'Amour was selected for the Venice Classics section of the 82nd Venice Film Festival, where director TSAI Ming-liang received the FIPRESCI Lifetime Achievement Award.

2025.10.23

The Institute held its "World Day for Audiovisual Heritage Annual Restoration Results Presentation and Appreciation Ceremony" to thank audiovisual donors from across different sectors, while also promoting the archiving, preservation, and digital restoration of Taiwan's cultural assets in film, television, and radio. This year's donations included LU Hsiao-fen's Best Actress trophy from the 20th Golden Horse Awards and an original poster for her screen debut, On the Society File of Shanghai (1981).

In collaboration with the Kaohsiung Film Festival, the Institute presented a retrospective of director PAI Ching-jui, featuring the newly restored films Lonely Seventeen, Good Bye! Darling, and Accidental Trio.

The digitally restored The Clown and the Swan held its world premiere at an outdoor screening, where its return after four decades resonated strongly across generations.

Students from Taipei School for the Visually Impaired were invited to the Institute for a screening of the digitally restored Grandma and Her Ghosts, accompanied by audio description and a post-screening discussion as part of efforts to promote inclusive access to audiovisual cultural heritage.

In collaboration with the New Taipei City Art Museum, the Institute presented the “Image Resurgence: NTCAM × TFAI Classic Film Festival," themed around urban memory, featuring digitally restored films including Grandma and Her Ghosts, Dust in the Wind, Eat Drink Man Woman, The Twilight of Tamsui, The Dragon Boat Festival, and Deng Nan-guang 8mm Collection 1935-1941.

In collaboration with the Hakka Public Communication Foundation, the Institute presented “Telling the Stories of Hakka Villages in the Hakka Language: Hakka Classic Films,” featuring screenings of the digitally restored The Story of a Small Town and My Native Land (Hakka-dubbed).

In collaboration with Czech Centre Taipei, the Institute presented the limited screening program “Karel Zeman: A Czech Animated Odyssey.”

The Institute held its inaugural international forum, “Future to the Back: Archives in Motion,” bringing together representatives from leading archival institutions in the United States, Japan, South Korea, Thailand, and Indonesia, with five thematic lectures, two panel discussions, and one pre-screening introduction.

The Institute hosted an audiovisual archiving collaboration forum, inviting audiovisual and cultural institutions from across Taiwan to share collaborative experiences and explore future partnerships, expanding access to audiovisual culture.

The Institute's latest restoration, The Game They Called Sex, was invited to the Festival des 3 Continents in Nantes, France, where it held its world premiere.

The 4K restoration of Vive L'Amour returned to one of its original filming locations for its Asian premiere, attended by director TSAI Ming-liang and cast members LEE Kang-sheng and YANG Kuei-mei. The event also featured screenings of the Institute's archival work A Morning in Taipei and its documentary Archiving Time, drawing over a thousand attendees.
