Mission of Calling

From creation to preservation, every film and television work represents the collaborative effort of diverse professionals. It is a cross-generational mission in which each contributor plays a vital role in passing down cultural memory.

This section invites experts of film production, restoration, and archiving to share their experiences. Through a “face-to-face” encounter with industry professionals, you’ll discover the wide range of roles behind the scenes and witness how knowledge, experience, and sense of dedication are passed from one generation to the next. Feel the wisdom, perseverance, and passion woven into every frame of these moving images.

Soundscape Adventures

Sound plays a vital and multifaceted role in film, television, and radio. It enhances visual perception, guides the audience’s emotions, and conveys meaning. Language, sound effects, music, and even moments of silence, jointly create a narrative space of sounds.

In this mission, listen closely to the voices and memories of Taiwan’s diverse communities captured in historical radio broadcasts. Discover the behind-the-scenes craft of sound design, including foley and voice acting. Learn how sound drives storytelling, shapes characters, and sets the mood. Imagine seeing with your ears—and step into the immersive world of soud.

Broadcast On-Air Radio broadcasting in Taiwan began during the Japanese colonial period. In the early postwar years, it primarily served as a tool for government announcements. Over time, it evolved into a rich and diverse medium featuring news, music, education, and public affairs—becoming a vital part of Taiwan’s collective sonic memory.

This section features historical programs from the TFAI’s collection, including broadcasts from Taiwan New Telecommunication and Voice of Han Broadcasting Network. It also includes a special segment by musician and cultural commentator Jutoupi, reflecting on the theme songs of Taiwanese cinema. From public discourse to pop culture, these broadcasts capture the voices and ideas that shaped generations.

Dubbing Challenge During Taiwan’s martial law era, the government promoted Mandarin as the official language, which eventually led to Mandarin becoming the dominant language used in film and television dialogue. The voice acting industry, at the time, was heavily shaped by state-led cultural policies. Yet beyond language and cultural translation, dubbing also brings characters to life—using vocal expression, timing, and emotion to shape personalities and deepen storytelling.

In this challenge, you will step into the role of a voice actor by dubbing characters from the animated film Grandma and Her Ghosts. Discover how voice transforms narrative and breathes new soul into the visual experience.

Exploring Foley In the early days of cinema, before synchronized sound recording was available, most audio was produced separately in a studio. Even with the advent of sync sound, many of the sounds we hear on screen—like footsteps, wind, or action effects—are still crafted during post-production. Foley artists use various props to simulate these sounds, adding texture and dramatic tension to enhance the sense of realism.

Now, step into the martial world of the classic film A Touch of Zen and try your hand at foley creation. Experience how sound can reshape the rhythm and breath of moving images.

It's Magic !

Every stage in the creation of a moving image work, from camera framing and visual composition to performance and post-production editing, plays a vital role in shaping the final narrative.

In this mission, you’ll step into the forest of The Fantasy of Deer Warrior and take part in the filmmaking process. Switch freely between the roles of director, actor, and editor as you discover the building blocks of visual storytelling. Experience the magic of green screen filming and video editing, and explore the techniques and imagination behind cinematic illusions—ultimately creating a short film that is uniquely yours.

Edit Your Reality Editing is the key to shaping a story. By selecting and rearranging filmed footage, editors create rhythm, build emotion, and even alter the viewer’s understanding of the narrative. In cinema, montage theory shows how reordering shots can give new meaning to images.

Play the Moment A work comes to life when it is shared with an audience. From early film reels projected in theaters, to the rise of television and online streaming, the ways we present moving images have constantly evolved. Yet each screening marks the beginning of a work’s journey into collective memory.

Guardians of Memory

Over time, audiovisual materials grow fragile—threatened by deterioration, damage, and disappearance. TFAI is dedicated to preserving Taiwan's film and audiovisual heritage—from film and television to radio archives.

In this mission, discover the restoration techniques used on film reels, videotapes, and paper-based artifacts, and witness the craftsmanship involved in reconstructing history. Every frame, every sound is the result of a race against time. You are invited to become a guardian of memory—ensuring that the fading light and sound of the past can once again be seen, heard, and remembered.
