Preserving classics and memories. Connecting the past with the future.
Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute is the only public body in Taiwan specifically responsible for the collection and preservation of film and audiovisual assets. TFAI’s six major objectives are: Enriching collections, enhancing technology, deepening research, diversifying promotion, expanding education, and facilitating multi-party exchanges. With these six objectives in mind, TFAI serves as an important hub for the research, education, promotion and reuse of Taiwan’s film and audiovisual heritage. Through licensing, TFAI helps promote the production and diversity of Taiwan’s cultural assets, including films and other audiovisual materials. TFAI has also been proactively promoting Taiwan’s audiovisual assets abroad, solidifying the country’s cultural brand values and becoming one of the world’s new key audiovisual cultural hubs.
Moving images have borne witness to a society’s cultural development and the many faces of time. As these videos have an important influence on the film history, artistic achievements and contemporary society, no matter how bad they deteriorate, the conservators will never stop attempting to preserve them. From preservation to restoration, it’s a race against time. We have to keep up with the fleeting time in order to keep our memories from disappearing. From collecting and inspecting film reels, to maintaining and cleaning them; from scanning the moving images and sound, to restoring and coloring them, the process is time-consuming and labor-intensive, and requires a large amount of resources and manpower. Currently we are preserving several hundred thousand pieces of memories on this island. The digital restoration lab founded in 2014 has digitally restored 66 classic films and digitalized 419 videos. We will continue preserving films and other audiovisual files through digital restoration technology. In this race against time to preserve the precious cultural heritage, your support will be of great help to our collection and digital restoration project, enabling us to preserve memories and history, and through the craftsmanlike skills in restoration, to connect the past with the future and cultivate a complete subjective identity.
