During the final phase of the Taiupian era, a new subgenre of films emerged, pushing moral and censorship boundaries. Often released under different titles or with performers' names hidden, they aimed to attract savvy audiences. For 30 years of Taiyupian rediscovery, few have had the opportunity to see these “unconventional” films that risked everything on the industry’s fringe.

This program presents four unique exploitation films from our archives that confront issues untouched by the Golden Age of Taiwanese cinema (Taiyupian): sexual violence, voyeurism, and sexual health. They shine a light on the turbulent transition between Taiwanese- and Mandarin-language, black-and-white and color, and cinema and television.
