1961年王天林執導、宋淇編劇的《南北和》大獲成功，隔年電懋趁勝追擊，由製片宋淇商請金馬獎編劇秦羽提供原著故事，並力邀張愛玲執筆改寫劇本，為電懋的溫情基調添上喜鬧氣息，交織出這齣融合市井語言趣味、文化衝突的南北大戲。

Leung Sing-por and Liu Enjia, two plump comedic stars of M.P. & G.I., reunite with director Wong Tin-lam in this foodie comedy of culinary rivalry. They play competing restaurant owners—Cantonese versus Northern cuisine—whose long-running feud intensifies when their children decide to marry. With a witty script by Eileen Chang that uses regional dishes to frame cultural contrasts, the film ultimately resolves into a warm-hearted story of two decent men learning to set aside their differences for their children's happiness.
