育有一子的寶兒因結婚八年的丈夫出軌而協議離婚，加入單身好姐妹的社交圈，在恣意放縱的表面下共嚐孤獨；前夫與情人同居，卻對前妻無微不至的照顧念念不忘，毅然轉身試圖挽回婚姻。重歸舊好的兩人，卻發現橫亙在自由與家庭圍城之間的矛盾，從未真正解開。

原為藝人訓練班學生的關錦鵬在1970年代末由電視轉到電影圈，為許鞍華、翁維銓、區丁平等多位新浪潮大將擔任副導演。1985年初執導演筒即嶄露頭角，首作《女人心》更成為當年票房最高電影之一。有別於同期香港電影的粗獷寫實，邱剛健以細膩婉轉的筆觸探入現代女性的內心世界，盡顯雅致的文藝風範。關錦鵬多年後憶起與其合作的經驗，依然難忘邱剛健在創作上嚴苛自求，以及對劇本的極致嚴謹。

After eight years of marriage, Pao-er separates from her unfaithful husband and seeks solace with single friends to navigate loneliness, while her ex-husband, bored with his young lover, longs for her care. Reunited, they find the friction between domesticity and freedom unresolved. Marking the directorial debut and box-office hit of Stanley Kwan, who worked under New Wave masters since the late 1970s, the film, scripted by Chiu Kang-chien, explores the modern female psyche with a witty look at intimacy.
