由胡金銓、李行、白景瑞合導，取〈女起解〉、〈坐樓殺惜〉、〈活捉三郎〉等戲曲母題，將傳統戲曲情境與身段轉化為電影形式的實驗。白景瑞不倚賴對白，改以現代舞與視覺調度推進敘事：人物屢被門窗線條框限，情緒在顯露與壓抑之間游移；推拉鏡頭、快速節奏與鮮豔對比色的使影像華麗卻帶壓迫。他直面城鄉落差、傳統與現代的衝突，帶出更貼近現實的質地，呼應早年《再見阿郎》的寫實衝動，也與同時代的新電影相互映照。

Three eras unfold as three intertwined love triangles, linked by the cursed Fish-Belly Sword that turns desire into tragedy again and again. Co-directed by King Hu, Lee Hsing, and Pai Ching-jui during the early-1980s industry slump, the film reworks opera motifs into cinematic experiments. Pai's segment relies on modern dance and visual staging rather than dialogue, using boxed-in framing, partial occlusion, rapid pacing, push-pull movement, and bold color contrasts to convey love under pressure.
