1950年代，許毅生因參加讀書會而被警總逮捕，出賣了友人陳桑，導致他遭到槍決。為此許長久痛苦內疚，決心於臨終前尋找其墳，向他致歉。萬仁透過虛構的故事，刻劃出白色恐怖倖存者儘管事過境遷但仍無法走出的苦痛，亦藉其他角色，揭示了不同主體的創傷經驗。此片為萬仁導演回望歷史、拼湊歷史記憶的力作，是其台灣三部曲的第二部。

Suspected of being a leftist, Ko spent around 30 years in prison and institutions, with a constant, obsessive agony about the fate of his best friend Chen, who was executed in the 1950s. Soon after his release, Ko goes in search of the truth and a part of himself. Only when he learns the truth is he able to pay his respects. The second film of Wan Jen's Taiwan trilogy.
