During the Sino-Japanese War, young nurse Sakura Nishi is sent to a field hospital in Tianjin, China, where she is raped by a soldier she later must care for. Amid mutilated bodies and unrestrained desire, she forges a tender bond with Dr. Okabe, a morphine-addicted surgeon numbed by endless casualties. Following him to the front, Sakura witnesses how war strips people of their dignity and compassion, laying bare its brutal exploitation of women and its deep-seated futility.
