靜雄自幼喪父，由貌美如花的母親獨力拉拔，並長年接受家族好友橋本庇蔭，靜雄成年後亦在安排下，與一同長大的橋本之女訂婚。婚禮前夕，靜雄從未婚妻臉上驚見母親五官的影子，童年回憶湧上，他開始暗忖母親與橋本偷情，並懷疑未婚妻是同母異父的手足；更令人不安的是，他對母親的依戀竟比對未婚妻的愛更為熾烈。

吉田喜重離開松竹另起「現代映畫社」後的首部製作，亦標誌著其風格轉型起點。意識流的閃回敘事、暗藏張力的不協調構圖，宛如雷奈與安東尼奧尼的東洋傳人，以記憶碎片、疏離美學刻劃戀母及亂倫禁忌，藉慾望暗湧的淒美殉死，映現日本戰後社會倫常的崩解。

A young man raised by a widowed mother plans to marry his childhood friend, but her resemblance to his mother awakens long-buried fears. Suspecting an affair in the past and even a possible shared parentage, he is torn between desire, guilt, and confusion. As memories intrude through shifting flashbacks, he struggles to face the possibility that his fiancée may be his half-sister and that his attachment to his mother runs dangerously deep.
