反黑組探員肥沙在後巷遭襲昏倒，醒來發現遺失佩槍。機動部隊（PTU）隊長展哥本著「穿上制服就是自己人」，暫時不向上司報告，並暗中助肥沙尋找失槍。此時肥沙奉命調查黑幫老大兒子被殺案件，其中竟有失槍的線索，過程中卻引起重案組張督察的懷疑。一宗失槍事件，有人濫用職權、有人隱瞞證據，一夜間牽動PTU、重案組、反黑組和幾派黑幫人馬，黎明前更遇上準備偷渡的匪幫，暗夜的大都會儼如無管制的原始森林，上演一場殘酷的槍戰廝殺。

本片前後花了兩年時間拍攝，是杜琪峯口中「給自己的實驗習作」。高反差的燈光佈局、動靜有致的人物走位、簡約有力的對白設計，營造出充滿個人風格的黑色電影。

A police officer is ambushed and loses his service revolver in a back alley. The PTU squad leader, refusing to report the mishap, begins a secret overnight search, believing uniformed men must protect one another. When the son of a gangster is murdered, the lost weapon emerges as a key clue. As night deepens, blurred lines of power, loyalty, and corruption draw police and gangs into a tightening spiral. As dawn nears, the city slips into a feral state, culminating in a brutal gunfight with a smuggling gang poised to flee.
