潘禮德以第一人稱旁白回顧過去，用手塑泥偶代替真實人物，穿插歷史資料影像，重返他被奪走的珍貴童年：他與家人本在金邊過著富裕生活，1975年赤柬政權入侵後被送往農村強制勞動，期間他見證了赤柬的種種暴行，目睹家人在飢餓、疾病中紛紛死去。紅色高棉期間（1975-1979）的勞改與屠殺造成逾200萬人死亡，抹去柬埔寨近1/4人口，是許多人至今無法忘懷的夢魘。導演以虛實交錯的魔幻手法，讓泥偶召喚逝者重生，它們的手工質地、稚拙造型，卻蘊藏了最深邃的情感，與最沉痛的省思。

Using clay dolls instead of characters, archival images and his narration, the director documents his own experiences during the Cambodian regime. The invasion of the Khmer Rouge regime in 1975 forced Panh and his family to labor camps, where they died of starvation and disease. Provocative, painful, and ultimately transcendent, The Missing Picture transforms Panh's search for a seemingly irrecoverable past into both an artistic and a historical triumph.
