1949年，紐約唐人街正瀕臨一場「光棍危機」。排華法案長年限制華人女性入境，男人無法娶妻生子，眼看香火將滅，所幸王華記的兒子斌來因二戰從軍有功，獲准迎娶中國新娘，遂被安排返鄉成親，帶回嬌妻李美愛。孰料斌來作為全街的命根子，竟因過勞與長輩壓力而無法行房，原被視為神仙眷侶的小倆口，自此婚姻觸礁。

改編自雷霆超的同名小說，和李安《囍宴》同樣以傳宗接代與性焦慮為題，超前探索美國華人的中西文化衝突。褪去原著的寫實沉重，改披輕盈調侃的浪漫喜劇外衣，在彼時壓抑、愁苦的華美電影系譜中，形塑出少見的活力影像。混血小生王盛德、氣質女星繆騫人展現細膩演技，香港諧星曾志偉、沈殿霞亦有亮眼的破格演出。

In post-WWII New York's Chinatown, a young Chinese-American man is pressured by his father into an arranged marriage after the U.S. lifts its ban on Chinese women immigrants. Juggling parental expectations, restaurant management, and marital conflicts, he faces an unconsummated marriage as the central dilemma of this wry comedy. Based on Louis Chu's 1961 novel, Wang humorously explores the clash between traditional values and personal desires.
