淑惠在舞廳賣唱，拉拔妹妹淑清考進藥廠。淑清戀上開朗的玻璃部主任，時常與姊姊分享彼此的戀愛心事，卻在五月十三日迎城隍這天，發現兩人竟愛上同一人。淑清憤而離家，卻捲入一宗兇殺命案。本片藉著陰錯陽差的愛情和兇殺，描寫嬌生慣養的妹妹一夕長大，是台灣電影拍攝女性心境成長的先驅。

After their mother's death, Siok-hui works as a nightclub singer to support her sister, Siok-tshing, who disapproves of the job. Siok-tshing develops affection for her colleague, Bun-pin, who, to her surprise, is in love with Siok-hui. Distressed, Siok-tshing drowns her sorrows in alcohol and is taken to a hotel by a businessman obsessed with her sister. Siok-hui hurries to the hotel, only to find him lying in a pool of blood.
