The sudden decision of Marshovia's richest widow to leave for Paris inflicts a potential financial crisis for the country. The king sends Count Danilo to seduce the widow before her wealth falls into the hands of a foreigner by marriage. Danilo arrives in Paris, but heads straight into the bosoms of the cabaret dancers instead and becomes infatuated with their new dancer "Fifi", tossing his mission and the widow out of his mind.
