「大飯店，始終如一。人來人往，什麼事也沒有發生」。吵雜的飯店大廳聚集來自四面八方的旅客，各自懷著不同目的與憧憬，周旋在人與人之間。身分高貴的男爵主動結識時日不多的會計員、大亨為著商業交易雇用懷有明星夢的打字員，而真正的芭蕾女明星則口口聲聲想結束自己的生命。無論真心誠意或不懷好意，所有人在命運牽連中，尋找屬於自己的歸宿。

第一場戲由接連不斷的電話鈴聲揭幕，飯店的電話亭裡響起百種人生，幾句簡短的回應，便定調了角色們的背景、性格與目的。而演員們獨一無二的腔調與口條，凸顯了角色們之間不同的特色，更因此誕生了此片於影史中的經典台詞：「讓我一個人靜一靜」。

The bustling lobby of the Grand Hotel hosts guests seeking redemption to the burdens they each carry. They mingle and befriend one another, succumbing to the sincere facades of their new acquaintances. As the fates of a penniless Baron, a dying accountant, an uncompassionate mogul, an ambitious stenographer and a washed-up ballet starlet intertwine, they must differentiate true companions from lustful predators.
