戰後東京百廢待興，福原一家人相依為命，生活一貧如洗但情感親密。正當福原夫婦準備開設洗衣店，自療養院返家的長子卻驟然辭世；父親也因積勞成疾而病倒，不幸撒手人寰。此後，母親獨力撫養兩名女兒和外甥，在亡夫同業的幫助下經營洗染生意，大女兒卻擔心她將就此改嫁......。一生勞碌的母親，能否繼續守護這風雨飄搖的家？

全片改編自得獎兒童散文，《浮雲》編劇水木洋子與成瀨巳喜男初次合作即創佳績，以洋溢童趣的口吻，真摯刻劃希望與絕望交織的戰後庶民生活。據傳田中絹代曾力邀水木為《戀文》執筆劇本，兩人最終雖未合作，卻可窺見田中致力發掘其他女性創作者、深化女性觀點的企圖。

Forced to run the family dry-cleaning business after her son and husband's successive deaths, Masako grapples with the challenges of handling her rebellious daughter while supporting the family. Adapted by female screenwriter Mizuki Yoko from an award-winning youth essay, the film presents nuanced women characters in the family film genre. Tanaka skillfully embodies the subtle emotions of a traditional, resilient mother in postwar Japan.
