16 世紀的日本戰國時代，茶道大師千利休的繼女阿吟亭亭玉立，心儀青梅竹馬的俊美武士右近，卻因對方有婦之夫的身分而無法結合。心灰意冷的她下嫁當地商賈，心中仍惦記舊愛；右近則因天主教信仰而遭官府流放。此時，大權在握的豐臣秀吉覬覦阿吟美貌，意圖強行納她為妾，阿吟卻再也無法壓抑內心情感，縱使粉身碎骨也要勇敢逐愛。

田中絹代最後一部導演作品，由女演員有馬稻子、岸惠子、久我美子創辦的獨立公司監製，從阿吟忠於自我的視角出發，聚焦女性自主意志和男性政治權勢的拮抗，並請來小林正樹御用的「攝影天皇」宮島義勇掌鏡，蕩氣迴腸的彩色攝影，讓淒美禁戀更添傳奇色彩。

In 16th century Japan, amidst the prohibition of Christianity, Ogin, the step-daughter of a tea master, secretly loves Ukon, a Christian samurai who is already married. Ukon's religious devotion prevents him from reciprocating her feelings, and the plot thickens with the arrival of a wealthy suitor for Ogin. Tanaka's final directorial venture vividly captures a woman's sublimated desire in feudal Japan with the technical grandeur of the jidaigeki genre.
