Based on Saga Hiro's memoirs, Tanaka's first color film in Cinemascope recounts the tale of Ryuko, an aristocrat forced to wed Futetsu, the younger brother of the last Chinese emperor Puyi. Unexpectedly, she finds love in this political marriage—until the currents of WWII prevail. Depicted with exquisite cinematography and production design, the film fulfills Tanaka's ambition to narrate a lavish historical saga from a critical female perspective.
