古都奈良，淺井家的三位女兒身處不同人生階段，各自徬徨於喪夫守寡、適婚待嫁、情竇初開的情感岔口。深秋明月皎潔，映照她們千迴百轉的心事：長女在丈夫戰死後返家照顧老父；次女與家族友人互有好感，卻羞於表達心意；古靈精怪的小妹設局撮合二姊的良緣，殊不知自己的戀情也正含苞待放。

本片由小津安二郎與齋藤良輔共同編劇，一度因片廠間的商業角力而停擺，小津積極斡旋、召集班底，力助田中絹代完成本片，待嫁閨女的劇情、抒情的空鏡頭，均流露濃濃小津調，但田中仍以靈動運鏡及特寫勾勒主角的思緒流轉、一顰一笑，另闢女性生活視角的輕盈甜美。

Based on an unused script co-written by Ozu and gifted to Tanaka, the film unfolds the romantic destinies of three sisters leading tranquil lives with their father in Japan's ancient capital, Nara. Ozu's influence is visible throughout the film, but Tanaka's poised and charming storytelling, along with her astute observations of women's everyday lives, infuses the romantic plot with realism and a female sensibility.
