退役軍人禮吉於二戰後前往東京與弟弟同住，他在老戰友介紹下覓得差事，為煙花女子代寫英文情書，向拋下她們返國的美國大兵索取金援。禮吉鬱鬱寡歡，掛念下嫁他人的初戀女友道子，不時在車站尋覓她的倩影。命運的牽引下，昔日戀人偶然重逢，禮吉滿心喜悅，直到他發現道子難言的秘密......。

田中絹代作為戰後女導演先驅，甫出手即碰觸敏感議題，請來木下惠介操刀劇本，《浮雲》森雅之、《早安》久我美子攜手主演，在浪漫言情外衣下刻劃日本對美國的矛盾情結，質問戰爭陰影、社會成見如何壓迫女性。田中本人更客串演出「潘潘女郎」，尖銳道出女性心聲。

Tanaka's directorial debut centers on a repatriated man who assists Japanese women in writing English love letters to their American GI lovers. The troubled veteran's notions of love and morality are tested when he reunites with his ex-girlfriend, whose hidden past is haunted by the trauma of the American Occupation. The film addresses the sexual politics of former sex workers in post-war Japan, blending the controversial topic with nuanced empathy.
