家鄉生存不易，思晨偷渡赴港，本欲投靠親戚卻遭輕蔑打發。她被迫住進髒陋擁擠的「寮屋」聚落，並因而與境遇相似的遠生結緣。透過媒人牽線，思晨和木工貴叔成婚，不僅自此衣食無虞，更有望獲得合法身份。然而，對難忘舊情的思晨而言，這段婚姻究竟是苦盡甘來，亦或是噩夢延續？

二十世紀中期，中國民生條件日趨惡劣，大量移民「南漂」湧入香港，卻未受到妥善對待，不幸淪為沒有明天的邊緣遺民。香港新浪潮導演蔡繼光聯手當時紅星鍾楚紅、萬梓良，寫實刻畫這批漂浪異客的日常風景、勞動處境及情慾流動，具體而微地譜出一段大時代的黑暗悲歌。

Facing hardship in her hometown, Si-sun smuggles herself into Hong Kong, only to be rejected by her relatives. She ends up in a crowded, squalid settlement and meets her lover Yuen-sang. Matchmaking leads to her marrying Uncle Gui, a carpenter, for security and legal status. However, she grapples with lingering feelings for Yuen-sang. Choi Kai Kwong's film portrays Chinese mainlanders' struggles in Hong Kong and highlights their daily lives, labor challenges, and emotional complexities, capturing the era's dark essence.
