改編中國四大美人之一「西施」故事。周敬王年間，吳王夫差伐越，越王句踐戰敗後淪為吳國臣虜。為懈下夫差心防再伺機復國，越國民女西施受句踐之命，投身吳國，鬆動夫差心智。夫差對西施寵愛有加，以響屧廊博其一笑，建館娃宮供其消遣，唯有吳國重臣伍子胥處處提防西施，並數度進言夫差莫荒廢朝政；應對伍子胥的質疑，西施則數度以巧計化解。夫差雖對西施用情至深，但當西施一步步令復國大計走上正軌，也是兩人必須死別之時。

Adapted from the stories of Hsi Shih, one of the four great beauties of ancient China, the time of the Chou Dynasty. King Fu-chai of Wu invades the Kingdom of Yue. The captured Yue king, Kou-chien, is imprisoned in Wu. To reclaim his kingdom, Kou-chien entrusts a Yue woman, Hsi Shih, to corrupt Fu-chai, who falls in love with her as intended. However, Tzu-hsu, an official of Wu, suspects Hsi Shih, but she outwits his intrigues. As Hsi Shih gradually realizes Kouchien's plan, she and the infatuated Fu-chai move slowly towards their fate.
