★1982 Nomination for Best Leading Actress, Golden Horse Awards

Jhih-ting and Jia-lin are two close friends at Pingtung Girls’ High School. Their closeness draws the attention of their classmate Chun-syue, who starts the rumor that they are a lesbian couple. Their teachers are concerned about the rumor and Jia-lin starts to keep her distance from Jhih-ting. Jhih-ting, whose mother is absent and whose father neglects her, had a hard time accepting that she loses her best friend over some groundless rumor. All of a sudden, an accident causes irreparable damage, but it also opens up a new prospect.

Girls' School was filmed at director LEE Mi-mi's alma mater, Pingtung Girls' High School. The film preserves the scenarios in Pingtung from forty years ago. The daily and realistic scenes show students biking to school, and boys and girls glancing at one another curiously at the bus stop. Set in a girls' schools, the coming-of-age story touches on issues like self-identity and conflicts with the system during the formative adolescent years. Homosexuality had just come to light in the early 1980s, so the film were was highly discussed at its released. It stars popular actors TIAN Niou, SHEN Yan, CHIN Han and JZHOU Dan-wei at the time and is deemed as a pioneer in the New Wave. Yet, the sensitive subject is met with a positive ending that still falls into the healthy realism genre. In the film, Jia-lin’s fearless attitude towards the “lesbian” label turns gradually into a reluctant compromise. It shows that homosexuals were still viewed negatively and under social pressure.
