阿遠和阿雲是一對青梅竹馬，每天一起搭火車上下學。阿遠國中畢業後到臺北當學徒，阿雲也跟著去謀職，兩人在異鄉互相扶持。某日阿遠接獲兵單到金門服役，期間兩人仍持續魚雁往返，卻未再收到阿雲回音......。

《戀戀風塵》描寫六○年代青年離鄉背井、出外打拚，反映對當時臺灣社會環境的關照。本片是吳念真本人的初戀經歷，即使寫好劇本，侯孝賢拍攝時也經常因地制宜或讓演員即興發揮。吳念真道：「侯孝賢那傢伙，是拍環境的。」侯孝賢不喜直線發展的敘事和過度包裝的設計，而是運用情緒、氛圍與畫面直接跳接。觀眾雖未看到阿雲將寫好自己姓名、住址的1,096個信封交予阿遠的這一幕，卻得以感知超越1,096個信封的情感。朱天文說：「侯孝賢的魅力在於，露出銀幕上的永遠只有一小部分，有一大部分是活在觀者的人生閱歷中。」阿遠最終沒打算問出口的，彷彿隨著阿公的香菸裊裊，消散在群山環繞的雲淡風輕之間。

The story focuses on a boy and his childhood sweetheart who accompanies him to school by train every day. After graduating from junior high school, the boy becomes an apprentice in Taipei, and the girl follows him to work there. Life in the big city is tough; nevertheless, they support and take care of each other. Later on, the boy is conscripted into the army. He does his military service on an outlying island and eagerly stays in contact with the girl by mail.

Dust in the Wind portrays young people in the 1970s, who left their hometowns to earn their living; it develops reflections on the social circumstances of that period. The screenwriter WU Nien-jen also put his experience of first love in it. WU describes how HOU makes films, “This guy captures the environment.” Despite having scripts, HOU often makes changes or lets performers improvise according to states on the spot. Rather than relying on straightforward narration and delicate design, HOU prefers using jump cuts led by atmosphere and feelings. As screenwriter CHU says, “HOU’s charisma lies in the fact that he only shows a small part of the story on the screen. It is the life experience of the viewers that completes the film.” Though the act of giving envelopes to the boy is not shown, we can still sense the strong affection. The envelopes are marked with the girl’s name and there are 1096 pieces in total, asking the boy to write her every day. In the end, the question the boy holds in mind seems to dissolve along with the smoke from grandpa’s cigarette. All melts into winds in the surrounding mountains.
