Celebrating 70 Years of Taiyupian: A Retrospective of Visionary Director LIN Tuan-chiu
Born in Yingge, Taiwan, during the Japanese colonial period, LIN Tuan-chiu traveled to Japan for his education and graduated from the Department of Political Economy at Meiji University in 1942. During his time in Tokyo, frequent visits to the theater ignited a profound passion for the dramatic arts. Upon graduation, he joined the Shinjuku Moulin Rouge theater, a troupe renowned for leading the "New Comedy Movement," where he served as a professional playwright. His debut work, The Mountain Village, earned him acclaim from the Tokyo Shimbun as the "first Taiwanese playwright." Later, recommended by Moulin Rouge director SASAKI Chisato, he joined Toho Film Company, where he honed his craft as an assistant director under masters like MAKINO Masahiro.
Following his return to Taiwan, LIN continued his work in screenwriting and directing, actively participating in the "Taiwanese New Drama Movement." However, in the aftermath of the 228 Incident, he withdrew from the theater to manage his family’s coal mining business. In 1957, spurred by Japanese director IWASAWA Yoshinori’s critique that the Taiwanese film industry lagged thirty years behind Japan’s, LIN resolved to revitalize domestic cinema. He founded Yufeng Film Company and established the large-scale Hushan Studio in his hometown of Yingge. Simultaneously, he formed a non-profit acting school, nurturing many iconic figures of the silver screen, including CHANG Mei-Yao.
As the golden age of Taiwanese-language cinema (Taiyupian) began to flourish in the late 1950s, LIN Tuan-chiu introduced innovative techniques and modern cinematic thought, laying a solid foundation for the industry. To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the birth of Taiwanese-language cinema, this program features three of LIN’s representative works—digitally restored by the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute (TFAI): May 13th, Night of Sorrow, Six Suspects, and The Husband's Secrets. Also included is Vote for San, a Chaplin-esque comedy preserved in the TFAI archives.
