作家鍾理和愛上女工鍾平妹，但同姓姻緣卻是客家人成婚大忌，遂受家人反對。鍾理和帶平妹私奔至瀋陽，期盼在原鄉中國找到新生活。但戰火無情，當地的反日情況迫使他們返台，歸隱山林的鍾理和一邊寫作一邊教書而積勞成疾，幸得平妹支持與照顧，他徹夜未眠握著筆桿，持續在稿紙上展現生命力。

1970年代臺灣在國際歷經挫敗，反共復國無望，為了穩定民情而修正電影政宣路線，以流行音樂等包裹新的愛國論述：中華民國在台灣。由鄧麗君演唱主題曲以更貼近大眾；而鍾理和對原鄉的想望，則仍強調台灣與中國的連結。本片雖為致敬本土作家，仍透露政治與藝術的不可分割性。

Writer Chung Li-he falls for fellow villager Chung Ping-mei but faces family disapproval. The couple moves to Shenyang, China, and lives happily despite poverty. After the war, they return to Meinong, Taiwan, where Li-ho becomes a teacher. Struggling with illness, he continues to write, pouring his dreams into stories with the unwavering support of Ping-mei. Though the film pays tribute to local writers, it subtly highlights the intertwined relationship between politics and art.
