1973 年智利發生軍事政變，隔年獨裁者皮諾契上台，迫使盧伊茲逃往巴黎，抵達不久便開始拍攝此片。主角是自智利跋涉至巴黎的流亡者，他們為了融入當地而學習法語，盼望解決異鄉生活的窘迫，卻也試圖延續智利的西語文化，並在未知國度組織抵抗行動。盧伊茲結合虛構與紀實的手法，深刻呈現激進抵抗者的困頓與掙扎，並不時散發情境喜劇的況味，令人會心一笑。本片受布萊希特同名劇作啟發，藉由劇場式調度，創造一個不存在的辯證空間，聆聽流亡者彼此的對話。然而，片中流露的批判與諷刺卻在流亡者社群引起爭議，使導演變成同胞眼中的叛徒。

In 1973, a military coup occurred in Chile and dictator Pinocchi came to power. Ruiz was forced into exile in Paris. He started shooting this film shortly after arriving. The protagonist is the displaced Chileans in Paris. He combines fictional and documentary techniques to profoundly present the lives of these radical resisters. They are forced to continue their resistance from exile, but at the same time deal with the basic constraints of daily life in a foreign land.
