1984年，全國高中聯合招考結束，名落孫山的周儒林與陳敬進入了南陽街上，專收重考生的「超仁補習班」。平凡學子在此都得變身成一心一意進入第一志願的超人，早上七點到校、晚上十點下課，擁擠的教室裡有著寫不完的考卷，男導師的嚴厲體罰是家常便飯，甚至連上廁所的時間都被嚴加控管。而不願承受這樣日子的陳敬決定隨父母移居美國，留下孤身奮戰的周儒林，隨著倒數時刻一天天逼近，成為英雄還是狗熊只有一線之隔。

日復一日背負高壓，在補習班唸「國四」的中學生拚命逆流而上，只希望能躍過聯考那座龍門，成為英雄。電影呈現出升學主義掛帥的聯考時代，只有考上理想學校才代表了一個人的成功；反之則是無數落榜學子黯然的重考心境。在當時興起青少年題材風潮的臺灣電影中，以極具想像力並融入諷刺趣味的方式，捕捉了時代的社會現象，對升學主義、補習文化及僵化的教育制度作出直率且大膽的批判。

In 1984, after finishing the High School Entrance Exam, JHOU and CHEN, both failing to get qualified scores, attend a cram school for resitting exams. Students become supermen dedicating their lives to preparation for scoring top priorities. They study from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. and have endless quizzes in cramped rooms. They often get physically punished by the male mentor and their time has been restricted rigidly. CHEN, who doesn’t want to live out days like this, decides to immigrate to the States with his parents. Now, JHOU has to fight on his own. As the day of the exam approaches, there is just a fine line between being a loser and being a hero.

Studying in the cram school, the students bear enormous strain as if they were forced to face grade retention. Everyone hopes to pass the exam with good scores and thus, he or she will be regarded as a hero. The film presents the audience with an era highly emphasizing credentialism. The definition of success is getting accepted by ideal schools; on the contrary, those who fail the exam live under the shadow of being losers. Among films featuring youth topics at that time, MAK’s work captures the social phenomenon with ironic imagination. It unequivocally criticizes credentialism, the culture of cramming, and the rigid educational system.
