When his writing career stalls, German journalist Philip Winter returns to Europe with eight-year-old Alice in his care after her mother disappears in Amsterdam. Guided only by Alice's hazy memories and a photograph of her grandmother's house, they travel through Germany in search of home. Along the way, their reluctant companionship deepens into affection, turning an aimless journey into a poignant search for connection and belonging.
