After losing her home and job, Fern packs her van and sets out across the American West, taking seasonal work and embracing life outside conventional society. Along the way, she meets fellow nomads who become her mentors and companions on the road. Adapted from Jessica Bruder's nonfiction book, Chloé Zhao blends fiction and documentary, tracing the lives, labor and resilience of those living on the margins of America.
