他攜妻兒搬到市中心多年，看著孩子們成家立業，卻始終覺得老么為人輕浮，不如老大穩重。當來自家鄉的舊識突然造訪，不但利用他的好客之情住進他家，更逐漸顯露另有所圖的野心。當他毫無預警地病倒時，老么卻與寄居的故舊越走越近，多年來被父母兄長埋怨的委屈如毒素般擴散，家人之間多年的芥蒂，不得不在此時浮上檯面。

Gideon and his wife Suzie's day-caring for their grandson while their youngest son Samuel works, constantly triggers conflict centering around Samuel's perceived irresponsibility. An unexpected visit from Harry, an old acquaintance from the South, delights the old couple, urging him to stay. However, Harry's gradual exploitation of the family's hospitality, reveals a sinister agenda that intensifies the family's long-held tensions. Charles Burnett's third feature weaves African American mysticism and folklore into the songs of family resilience.
