貧婦林阿嫂病逝後，留下孤苦無依的小珠。拾荒維生的石三泰將她帶在身邊照料，與三輪車工友陳阿發及大雜院鄰里，在破敗巷弄中相互扶持。當貧窮、傷病與情感糾葛接連襲來，這群小人物能否守住生活與彼此？

李行第一部國語片，也是他早期創作的重要轉折。花了不少時間勘景、觀察人物，甚至帶著劇組撿拾舊家具搭景，力圖建立可信的大雜院世界。雖以國語為主，仍保留極少量台語，也有台語片影星何玉華參與演出，台語片經驗的痕跡清晰可辨。攝影師賴成英打造了細緻的視覺影像，也是日後兩人長期搭檔的起點。此片以貧民區與勞動者為主角，則是李行日後對庶民處境、家庭倫理與鄰里關係關注所初現的輪廓。

After the death of an impoverished mother, her young daughter is taken in by a ragpicker. Together with a tricycle puller and their neighbors in a crowded tenement, they navigate poverty, injury, and emotional hardship, finding fragile bonds of care amid the struggle. Lee Hsing's first Mandarin-language feature, the film transforms his Taiyupian experience into an urban realist style. Its focus on working-class lives, family ethics, and neighborhood relations already points toward concerns that would shape his later work.
