本省西醫黃醫生與外省中醫陳大夫醫生比鄰而居，兩家人因語言不通、習慣不同而摩擦不斷；偏偏年輕一代互生情愫，使鄰里衝突一步步變得更難收拾，也逼得眾人重新思考彼此的距離。

本片為李行由台語片跨向國語片的重要轉折，亦是為他與家人自組的「自立電影公司」的創業嘗試，以及演員王滿嬌的出道之作。借用香港電懋《南北和》一類系列處理族群衝突的喜劇架構，但將衝突根源轉向本省／外省間 接觸時因語言不通產生的誤會與隔閡。李行延續其台語片常見的「二元角色」結構，透過衝突到結盟的過程推進劇情，以此部混語喜劇總結了他的台語片經驗。難得的是，電影結尾穿插了廟會陣頭的紀實影像，以「類民族誌」方式保留了當時台灣珍貴的民俗風貌。

A Taiwanese-speaking doctor of Western medicine and a mainland Chinese physician live next door, and language barriers turn everyday misunderstandings into escalating family conflict. When the younger generation falls in love, both households are forced to rethink their divisions. Produced by Lee Hsing's family-run Liberty Film Company, this mixed-language comedy reworks the model of Hong Kong's The Greatest Civil War on Earth through the everyday frictions of postwar Taiwan, turning linguistic difference, neighborhood tension, and family negotiation into the rhythm of comedy.
