1949年上海，船隻準備啟航前往海峽另一頭，姥姥因戰爭隨著將軍女婿移居台灣，眼前落腳處有著碩大庭院，夜晚的螢火蟲照亮了他們的笑容。姥姥照料著眾外孫，讓一家溫暖富足。將軍傷癒後退下戎馬身分，妻子忙著張羅生計，又懷上新生。時間流逝，孫子們長大，姥姥魂牽夢縈的，仍是河南老家那棵果實纍纍的紅柿子樹。

帶有半自傳色彩，王童在三部曲後歸返自身成長根源與歷史。《紅柿子》描繪國共內戰尾聲，一個軍人家族撤退來台的軍眷生活。

Based on a semi-autobiographical childhood memory, Wang Tong turns his attention back to his own roots and growth background. This film portrays a family fleeing from Henan to Taipei during the Chinese Civil War, and how they secure their living and future with eleven children when they become commoners in Taiwan after the father is dismissed. They gradually settle down, but at the same time, how will they deal with the nostalgia?
