Four lost souls—a rice merchant, a model, and two young women from Taiwan—cling to each other in existential emptiness. When a sudden murder strikes, the detective becomes a quiet witness not only to doom, but also to their chaotic desires. Inspired by director Stanley Kwan's real-life experience, Chiu Kang-chien's screenplay eschews traditional mystery to dissect the ambiguity of human intimacy, with the detective mirroring their futile longing for love—a poignant reflection of Hong Kong's fin-de-siècle anxiety.
