In 1830s Dorset, impoverished agricultural labourers form a secret union to resist exploitative wages, becoming known as the Tolpuddle Martyrs. Arrested and sentenced to hard labor in Australia, they endure brutal exile and harsh colonial punishment. Framed through the eyes of a travelling lanternist and his pre-cinematic devices, the film traces their struggle in a sweeping visual poem of working-class solidarity and human dignity.
