本片由李翰祥、胡金銓、李行、白景瑞四位導演各拍一段共同完成，其中〈喜〉由白景瑞執導，取材自《聊齋》。他刻意淡化恐怖氣氛，保留的是輕巧的鬼魅感與對人性的直視。沉迷「書中自有顏如玉」的書生，深夜遇見甄珍飾演的女鬼，原本的木訥拘謹，轉眼間就被慾望牽引，變得膽大妄為。

三大名導為紓解大導演李翰祥的國聯影業財務危機而拍攝本片，導演及主演卡司分文不取，傳為華語影壇一時佳話。〈喜〉幾乎沒有對白，只靠音效、音樂與節奏鮮明的剪接推進情節，是少見的影音實驗。林贊庭以彩色光影營造幽魅空間，跳接與快動作既致敬默片喜劇，也顯出白景瑞的玩心與精準調度。

Pai Ching-jui's segment  "Joy" in Four Moods adapts classical Chinese literature Strange Tales into a playful ghost farce. A prudish scholar meets a female spirit at night and instantly turns lustful—his "joy" revealed as pure desire. With almost no dialogue, the film relies on sound, music, and punchy editing. Cinematographer Lin Tsan-ting's colored lighting creates an uncanny space, while jump cuts and speed effects nod to silent comedy, turning supernatural romance into a sharp, light-footed satire of bookish hypocrisy.
