Shot in striking black-and-white CinemaScope, this poignant courtroom drama follows a young widow on trial after her husband's fatal mountaineering accident. Structured in flashbacks, it unfolds as an existential melodrama probing moral and emotional dilemmas. Drawing on the influences of Antonioni and Visconti, Masumura defies convention to portray a woman torn between destructive desire and a yearning to break free from submission.
