新藤兼人在公司瀕臨破產之際，自籌資金以極簡陣容完成此片。無對白的影像，赤裸呈現遺世獨立的勞動者之歌。寓言式的孤島情境，刻畫了日本民族性所根植的荒蕪歷史，反思二戰死傷無數後，日本在急速工業化下「生活與勞動仍須延續」的殘酷現實，在新浪潮的激昂鬥爭之外另闢人道主義蹊徑。

On a waterless islet in the Seto Inland Sea, a father, mother, and their two sons toil daily, rowing across the water to fetch buckets for their meager crops. A rare trip to the mainland offers a fleeting glimpse of comfort, but tragedy strikes when the elder boy falls ill while his parents are away. Told entirely without dialogue, the film distills their existence into pure gesture and rhythm, silently transforming their struggle into a moving portrait of survival.
