During the Napoleonic wars in the town of Saragossa, two soldiers discover a strange manuscript at an inn. The book chronicles the misadventures of 18th-century Spaniard nobleman Alfonse van Worden, divided into two parts. The first part follows Alfonse's supernatural encounters while passing through the Moors, terrorized by haunting ghosts. After a turn of events, the second part unravels nested stories told by an old gypsy, intricately woven to reveal a joyous, yet absurd, dream-like journey.
