少女蘋琪從鄉下遠赴加州水療中心求職，結識世故健談的同事米莉，不僅對她崇拜有加、模仿其穿搭，更費盡心思成為她的室友。米莉看似從容自信，卻被週遭旁人當作空氣，戀愛運亦頻頻碰壁。她們的房東太太威莉總獨自作畫、不發一語，其神祕壁畫卻彷彿預示三人命運。某夜，蘋琪意外發現米莉的不堪秘密，傷心欲絕而墜入泳池，昏迷醒轉後竟性情大變，兩人的主從關係亦徹底翻轉⋯⋯。

本片靈感源自阿特曼在妻子重病住院時做的一場夢，融合潛意識、身份交換等主題，找來雪莉杜瓦、西西史派克兩大「鬼后」互飆演技，並讓前者拿下坎城影后。全片攝影風格夢幻迷離，如鏡花水月般折射又互映，是阿特曼剖析女性心理的詭麗實驗之作。

Inspired by a dream Altman had shortly before production, the film unfolds in a sun-drenched California town where a shy young woman becomes entangled with her confident roommate and a mysterious muralist. As their identities morph and blur in unsettling ways, Altman weaves pathos and surrealism into a haunting meditation on the feminine psyche—a fever dream of alienation, shifting power dynamics, and dissolving boundaries of self and other.
