作家鍾理和愛上同姓的鍾平妹，遭家人反對。兩人私奔至瀋陽，期盼在原鄉找到新生活。抗日戰爭結束後，鍾氏一家返回臺灣。歸隱美濃的鍾理和在教書與寫作之間積勞成疾，幸得平妹支持與照顧，才能堅強面對每次退稿，徹夜未眠握筆在稿紙上築夢。七〇年代臺灣國際外交挫敗，政府轉向以流行文化包裹愛國論述，本片主題曲由鄧麗君演唱，更貼近大眾。

Writer Chung Li-ho falls for fellow villager Chung Ping-mei but faces family disapproval. The couple moves to Shenyang, China, and lives happily despite poverty. After the war, they return to Meinung, Taiwan, where Li-ho becomes a teacher. Struggling with illness, he continues to write, pouring his dreams into stories with the unwavering support of Ping-mei. Though the film pays tribute to local writers, it subtly highlights the intertwined relationship between politics and art.
