六〇年代的塞內加爾，易卜拉辛和兩位妻子在首都達卡過著簡樸的日子。某天易卜拉辛收到姪子從巴黎寄回的匯票，希望他能協助兌現並代為分配給親族。即便失業已久、生活困窘，易卜拉辛也未曾動念獨吞款項，卻接連在各級關口遭遇阻礙，甚至引來覬覦與詐騙。眼看匯票期限越來越近，易卜拉辛卻離這筆錢越來越遠。

「非洲電影之父」改編自己以法語寫就的同名小說，聚焦落魄的一家之主，諷刺法國殖民帶來的現代化，如何推倒父權傳統和人情互信，並以腐敗冷酷的資本遊戲及官僚迷宮取而代之。本片以沃洛夫語為非洲發聲，為首部以非洲語言拍攝的電影，對非洲影史及文化深具意義。

In 1960s Dakar, Ibrahim and his two wives live modestly. He receives a money order from his nephew in Paris and is asked to cash and distribute it. Despite his financial difficulties, Ibrahim never considers embezzling the money, but still faces ongoing obstacles and fraud, finding himself in crisis as the deadline approaches. Considered the "Father of African Cinema," Sembène uses humor and satire to critique French colonial modernization, marking a milestone with the film's Wolof dialogue.
