故事從一名劇作家與大製片的提案開始：男孩為追尋繪畫夢想來到瓦拉納西，意外踏上舞者之路，巧遇兒時玩伴且同是舞者的女孩，兩人在現實的摧殘下，仍一起完成建立藝術學校的夢想。然而，這項沒有票房保證的劇本提案，卻讓大製片將劇作家掃地出門，迫使他流落街頭......。

全片由烏代香卡自導自演，作為印度最重要的舞者之一，他改編辦學推廣北印度舞蹈的親身經歷，開啟印度歌舞片先河。全片舞風揉合西方劇場技巧，並為攝影機設計表演及光影效果，超現實的夢境場景，更影響後世如《流浪者》(Awara, 1951) 等作。

A writer pitches a film idea to a producer, and scenes from his dance movie come to life, unfolding the story of Udayan, a young dancer played by director Uday Shankar himself. Udayan relentlessly pursues his dream of establishing an arts academy, while vying for affection from Uma, his childhood friend and fellow dancer.
