In consequence to a night of reckless gambling, Earl of Burnstead gives away his dutiful valet Ruggles to the nouveau riche American millionaires, the Flouds. Though dreading the idea of being relegated to "the land of slavery," Ruggles takes up his new position diligently. Soon, Ruggles finds his life turned upside down as he settles among the barbaric Americans, and accidentally becomes a local celebrity.
