World War I veteran James Allen struggles to find a career in engineering after abandoning a secure factory job home. Penniless, things take a turn for the worst when he is forced to commit robbery at gunpoint. The police arrests and throws James into a chain gang where he endures brutal torture. With the help of his inmates, James escapes and returns to society assuming a new identity, but lives with fear as a fugitive.
