朱達長和小雲受父母之命指腹為婚，然朱只顧隨二叔公學習紙紮和法事，妹有情郎無意。朱的好友馬麟祥串通不肖之徒上演詐死戲碼以騙取陪葬品，朱察覺事有蹊蹺，便假扮紙紮人探查，不料被識破驅趕，馬也慘遭殺害。馬向朱借身還魂以報殺身之仇，卻趕不及在天亮前將軀體歸還，朱遂成孤魂野鬼。為使他死而復生，二叔公和小雲聯手對抗陰間鬼差。

午馬自導自演，洪金寶策劃及編劇，具濃厚中國民間鄉野色彩，結合靈幻、喜劇、功夫等港式元素。上映當年三十而立的林正英，不只作為武術指導，更維妙維肖地演出八旬老翁，是他演藝生涯中首次扮演道士角色，進而開啟日後接演《殭屍先生》之契機。

An effigy merchant's impotent brother has died and left a pregnant wife. Suspecting a scam and foul play, he schemes to inspect his brother's corpse before the burial, not knowing that his brother is actually alive and in on the scam. Directed by Wu Ma and planned by Sammo Hung, the film blends Chinese folklore, comedy, and kung fu. Lam Ching-ying, served as martial arts director, marking his first role as a Taoist priest, which led to his iconic role in Mr. Vampire.
