旅外鋼琴家蔚青首次返台演出，與前男友的妹妹佳莉見面敘舊，當年佳莉的哥哥順從父親，與蔚青分手；佳莉則違抗父命，爭取自己的愛情。自己選擇的婚姻理當幸福美滿，但三年前丈夫卻從海灘消失......。談話過程中佳莉陷入沉思，重新檢視婚姻與感情，並有了新的體悟。

楊德昌首部劇情長片，挑戰當年台灣影壇鮮見的非線事敘事結構。影片以女性在愛情與婚姻裡的際遇，窺見 1970-80 年代台灣家庭觀念轉變，以及現代性社會的疏離與重荷。而張艾嘉跨幅度詮釋青澀高中生、不諳世事少婦、獨立女性的蛻變，鮮明展現女性意識覺醒。時任新藝城公司台灣總監的她，更是新藝城與中影合資製作本片的推手。

Edward Yang's debut feature embraces a non-linear narrative structure rarely seen in Taiwan cinema at the time, exploring women's experiences in love and marriage while shedding light on societal alienation and evolving family dynamics in the early 1980s. Sylvia Chang's portrayal of the protagonist's different life stages highlights her awakened female consciousness. Moreover, as the Head of Cinema City's Taiwan branch, Chang plays a pivotal role in facilitating this co-production between the Hong Kong studio and Taiwan's Central Motion Picture Corporation.
