Navigating between the real and metaphysical realms, assassin Stray Cat battles against other comrades to move up the ranks of the Guild. After film company Nikkatsu fired Suzuki for his avant-garde film Branded to Kill, the sequel Pistol Opera — released 35 years later — pushes the boundaries of B-films and auteur cinema. Set amidst lurid stage sets reminiscent of the Italian Giallo movement, the film turns the yakuza genre on its head with hypnotic and ultra-stylized violence.
